James trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama before beginning his career in Stage Management and then moving into Production Management.

James has also worked on numerous productions for Scottish Opera, English National Opera, English Touring Opera and British Youth Opera, and he is the Production Manager for the Buxton Opera Festival.
